Vaillant – Scalable IoT Backend Platform for Smart Heating
End-to-End IoT

The Challenge
The central challenge was to ensure a continuous, high-performance end-to-end data flow between the mobile app, cloud platform, and heating systems. A complex cloud infrastructure consisting of IoT Hub, DPS, Event Hub, AKS, Kafka, and multiple microservices had to be orchestrated to operate reliably and auto-scale under high load. Additionally, modern DevOps standards, observability, and robust end-to-end monitoring needed to be established.
Our Solution
We developed a modular end-to-end architecture that maps all interactions between app, backend, and heating devices. This includes multiple specialized microservices for synchronous and asynchronous communication, as well as infrastructure provisioned through Terraform with IoT Hub, DPS, Event Hub, AKS, and Container Registry. Through consistent event streaming, functional programming, a modern CI/CD setup, and deep monitoring, we created a seamless data flow: user actions in the app trigger backend processes that generate appropriate configurations and send them back to the heating systems.
The Result
The result is a highly scalable IoT platform that enables stable interaction between app and heating devices. Telemetry data is reliably processed, configurations are automatically determined, and updates are deployed to devices in real-time. Enhanced monitoring provides transparent performance metrics, precise error detection, and overall significantly more stable platform operations.
