The Challenge
The IHK Schwaben needed a legally compliant way to collect and manage newsletter consent from their members. With GDPR requirements mandating explicit opt-in consent and the ability to easily modify preferences, a simple email signup form was insufficient. Members needed to subscribe to specific topics of interest – from regional business news to industry-specific updates – while the IHK required complete audit trails and automated confirmation workflows. As a public institution with a prominent digital presence, the platform also had to withstand constant security threats.
Our Solution
We developed a topic-based newsletter consent platform with an Angular frontend and Java/Spring Boot backend. Members can select specific topics they're interested in, and the system handles all GDPR requirements: double opt-in confirmation, easy preference management, and complete audit logging. The backend integrates with the IHK's existing member database via SOAP interfaces and automatically notifies both members and administrators when consent is granted or revoked. The architecture is distributed across multiple servers with defense-in-depth security principles.
The Result
The newsletter consent platform now serves thousands of IHK members, allowing them to customize exactly which communications they receive. The automated workflow has significantly reduced administrative overhead while ensuring full GDPR compliance. The modular architecture has proven its value, allowing the IHK to easily add new topics as their communication needs evolve.
