Hybrid & Cloud-native E-Commerce Migration Architecture

The Challenge

The main challenge was designing a sustainable architecture that enables both continued operation of existing on-premises systems and a gradual migration to the cloud. Interfaces between the existing e-commerce landscape and the new Azure environment had to be secured, requirements carefully gathered, and a Domain-Driven Design developed for Event Hub, Azure Functions, and downstream storage components—all while considering costs, operations, and technology selection.

Our Solution

We designed two complementary architecture variants: A Hybrid Architecture connecting on-premises e-commerce systems to Azure via secured connections, introducing Azure Event Hub as a central event and integration backbone, designing Azure Functions and microservice interfaces to decouple on-premises systems from cloud components, and defining interface and security concepts (API Management, AuthN/AuthZ, Azure Active Directory). Additionally, a Full-Cloud Architecture modeling e-commerce domains (orders, catalog, customers, inventory/availability, pricing) for a future cloud-only solution, using Event Hub, Azure Functions, Cosmos DB (MongoDB API), and Data Lake Gen2 as core building blocks with an API-First approach featuring cleanly defined, versionable interfaces. We also provided cost calculations and TCO analysis to determine an economically viable architecture variant and recommend the appropriate tech stack for the in-house development team.

The Result

The company received a clear, actionable architecture blueprint collection for migrating its e-commerce landscape to Azure—including a hybrid transition scenario and full-cloud target design. The new designs provide a cleanly decoupled interface landscape, a clearly structured Domain-Driven approach for cloud components, and a transparent cost basis for actual implementation. This enabled the internal development team to independently begin implementation based on the developed architecture.
